İngilizcede geçmişten bahsederken çok yaygın olmasa da past perfect tense yapısını kullanmamız gerekebiliyor. Yazılı dilde daha çok karşımıza çıkan bu yapı, özellikle de sınavlarda işinize yarayabilir.
Biz de bu içeriğimizde kısa bir past perfect konu anlatımından sonra sunduğumuz alıştırmalarla İngilizcede “mişli geçmiş zaman” olarak da anılan bu konuyu daha iyi anlamanıza yardımcı olacağız. O hâlde önce konuyu hatırlayalım, sonra da alıştırmalarımıza geçelim.
İngilizce past perfect tense konu anlatımı

Past perfect kullanım alanları
Türkçede “mişli geçmiş zaman” olarak da anılan past perfect tense yapısı, geçmişte belli bir zamandan önce gerçekleşmiş olaylardan bahsederken kullanılıyor. Mantıken bu yapıyı kullanırken geçmişin geçmişinden bahsediyoruz.
Örnek: I had already left the party by the time Ahmet arrived. (Ahmet geldiğinde ben partiden çoktan çıkmıştım.)
Yukarıdaki örnekte konuşan kişinin partiden çıkma işi, Ahmet’in gelmesinden önce gerçekleştiği için past perfect ile aktarılıyor. Ahmet’in gelmesi ile past simple yapısıyla belirtiliyor.
Kısacası present perfect tense’in present simple tense ile olan ilişkisini, past perfect tense’in past simple tense ile olan ilişkisine benzetebiliriz. Birisiyle şimdiki zamandan bahsederken diğeriyle geçmiş zamandan söz ediyoruz.

Past perfect tense’in nerede kullanıldığını anlamak için belli başlı zaman ifadeleri size sınavlarda yardımcı olabilir. Cümlenin içinde simple past tense ile kurulan bir cümle veya geçmişte belli bir zamandan bahseden bir ifade bulmalısınız. Eğer bahsedilen eylem bu zamandan daha önce gerçekleşiyorsa veya simple past ile aktarılan olaydan önceyse past perfect kullanmalısınız.
Bu noktada size yardımcı olabilecek bazı zaman ifadelerini aşağıdan inceleyebilirsiniz:
- before … (…dan önce)
- after … (…dan sonra)
- by … (… zamana kadar)
- by the time (… olana kadar)
- once (olunca)
- until … (… kadar)
Bu ifadeler size yardımcı olsa da bunları gördüğünüz anda past perfect yapısını doğrudan kullanmak yanıltıcı olabilir. İfadelerin cümleye nasıl bir anlam kattığını kavradıktan sonra eğer mantıklı bir olay örgüsü yakalarsanız past perfect’i daha önce gerçekleşmiş olayı aktarmak için kullanabilirsiniz.
Past perfect kullanım şekli
Past perfect tense ile cümle kurmanın oldukça basit bir mantığı var. Yardımcı fiilimiz “had”den sonra ana fiili düzenliyse “-ed” takısıyla, düzensizse de üçüncü hâliyle kullanıyoruz. Yardımcı fiili veya ana fiili özneye göre değiştirmemiz gerekmiyor.
Örnek: You had loved them before the graduation. (Onları mezuniyetten önce seviyordun.)
Bu örnekteki “love” fiili düzenli olduğu için “-ed” takısı alıyor.
Örnek: Nastya had made coffee for us when we came. (Nastya, biz geldiğimizde bize kahve yapmıştı.)
Bu örnekteki fiilimiz “make” ise düzensiz olduğu için 2. hâliyle (“made”) kullanılıyor. En yaygın fiillerin 2. hâllerini ilgili içeriğimizden tekrar edebilirsiniz.
Olumsuz yapı kurmak içinse yardımcı fiilimiz olan “had”i olumsuzluk eki “not” ile birlikte kullanarak “had not” kalıbını elde ediyoruz. Bunu “hadn’t” olarak da kısaltabilirsiniz. Bu yapıda ana fiili de “-ed” takısıyla veya üçüncü hâliyle kullanıyoruz.
Örnek: I hadn’t gone to school before that day. (O günden önce okula gitmemiştim.)
Soru cümlesi kurmak için de yardımcı fiilimiz olan “had”i cümlenin başına alıyoruz. Bu durumda da ana fiili 2. hâliyle kullanmamıza gerek kalmıyor.
Örnek: Had he prepared dinner for you when you arrived? (Sen vardığında sana akşam yemeği hazırlamış mıydı?)
